Common Questions

We know starting therapy is a big step. Here are some answers to common questions to help you feel comfortable beginning your journey with SkyLife Wellness.

How do I know if therapy is right for my child or teen?

If your child is struggling with managing emotions, social connections, or navigating neurodivergent traits, therapy can provide a safe space. We offer a consultation to discuss your specific concerns and determine how our neuro-affirming, play-based approach can help. Therapy can be beneficial when a child is experiencing ongoing emotional, behavioral, social, academic, or regulation challenges that are impacting daily life, relationships, confidence, or family functioning. Even when concerns seem “small,” counseling can provide children with a supportive space to build coping skills, process emotions, strengthen communication, and feel more understood and supported.

How involved are parents in the counseling process?

We view parents as essential partners. While the therapy sessions provide a private space for the client, we conduct regular parent check-ins and provide tools to help carry progress from our office into your home life. We believe parents are one of the most important parts of a child’s support system, which is why we encourage parent involvement throughout the counseling process whenever appropriate. Our counselors work collaboratively with caregivers by providing insight, education, feedback, and practical strategies that can help support emotional growth and skill development outside of the counseling room. We strive to help parents feel informed, empowered, and connected so that meaningful progress can continue at home, school, and within everyday family life.

Who will know what we are discussing?

we understand that trust and privacy are essential parts of the counseling process. Information shared in therapy is kept confidential within the legal and ethical limits of counseling, which means we generally do not share specific details of sessions without consent. However, there are important legal exceptions to confidentiality, including situations involving concerns about harm to self, harm to others, abuse or neglect, or situations required by law or court order. These protections are in place to help maintain safety while also supporting open and honest communication within therapy.

How long does counseling/play therapy take?

The length of counseling or play therapy varies depending on each individual child, teen, adult, or family and the concerns being addressed. Some clients may benefit from short-term support focused on a specific challenge or life transition, while others may benefit from longer-term therapy to address deeper emotional, behavioral, relational, or developmental patterns. In play therapy specifically, children often build trust and process experiences gradually through connection and play, which can take time depending on their personality, emotional needs, and life experiences. We view counseling as a collaborative process and regularly work with families to assess progress, adjust goals, and determine the level of support that best fits each client’s needs over time.

Do you take insurance?

SkyLife Wellness is a private pay practice. We can provide you with a 'superbill' that you may submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement.  We have chosen to remain a private pay practice so we can provide more personalized, flexible, and individualized care without many of the limitations often placed by insurance companies. Insurance providers frequently dictate medical necessity requirements, session limitations, diagnostic requirements, and even aspects of treatment planning and assessment processes. By remaining out-of-network, we are able to focus on what we believe is best for each client and family rather than fitting care into insurance-driven guidelines. This allows us to offer more comprehensive support, longer and more individualized sessions when needed, neuro-affirming assessment approaches, greater privacy, and a counseling experience that prioritizes connection, collaboration, and quality of care over productivity quotas or standardized treatment expectations.

What is neurodivergence?

Neurodivergent is a term used to describe individuals whose brains process, learn, communicate, regulate emotions, or experience the world differently from what is considered “typical” or neurotypical. This can include individuals with ADHD, Autism, learning differences, sensory differences, dyslexia, and other neurological variations. Being neurodivergent is not viewed as something “wrong” that needs to be fixed, but rather as a natural variation in how the brain functions and experiences the world. At SkyLife Wellness, we take a neuro-affirming approach that focuses on understanding, supporting, and empowering neurodivergent individuals while helping them build skills, confidence, self-understanding, and emotional well-being.

What does 'neuro-affirming' therapy mean?

Neuro-affirming therapy is an approach to counseling that recognizes and respects neurodivergence as a natural variation of the human brain rather than something that needs to be “fixed” or suppressed. Instead of focusing on making individuals appear more neurotypical, neuro-affirming therapy emphasizes understanding each person’s unique strengths, challenges, sensory needs, communication style, emotional experiences, and ways of interacting with the world. At SkyLife Wellness, our goal is to help neurodivergent children, teens, and adults feel understood, supported, and empowered while building practical skills, emotional regulation strategies, self-awareness, confidence, and healthier ways to navigate daily life without shame for who they are.
